Chef’s John’s Dockside Inn is a small and unpretentious eatery located in the newly retooled downtown Kissimmee. It is easy to miss when driving through, but you will be sad if you do.
Upon entering the restaurant, we were greeted and quickly seated by a very friendly wait staff. Drinks were poured and we spent some time perusing the menu. After a review of Chef John’s offerings, we were surprised by the variety of menu; due in no small part to the chef's experience at Pebbles and Blackfin.
The herb crusted filet mignon served with haricot vert and rosemary fingerling potatoes was, in a word, fantastic. The steak was evenly cooked and medium rare, just as ordered. The haricot vert were flavorful and coated with the perfect amount of butter. The fingerling potatoes appeared to actually be red new potatoes, but were very well roasted and had a delicious flavor with a slight amount of heat that slowly built as they were eaten.
The blackened mahi mahi served with haricot vert and Creole rice was pure bliss. Chef John did an amazing job preparing this fish. The fish started with a fresh butter taste that finished with a spicy ending. The Creole rice side dish had a wonderful taste of green peppers, Cajun spices, and a slight amount of heat. The haricot vert, as previously described, were very tasty as well. This dish is highly recommended to anyone who truly enjoys Cajun food.
Dessert was a flourless chocolate torte served with chocolate and cherry sauces as well as whipped cream. The torte had very big chocolate flavor without being overly rich or cloying sweet.
Overall, the flavors, service, location, and price make Chef John’s Dockside Inn a superb addition to downtown Kissimmee; I suspect we will be eating many more of Chef John’s dishes in the future.
